Manchester GayFest 2001
Outside Via Fossa. Via Fossa
opened in the early 1990s and was the first of the new-style cafe bars on Canal
Street. The inside is kind of gothic, with a lot of reclaimed bits and pieces
from old churches. At the time it was a culture shock for Manchester's gay community, which
was more used to tacky badly-decorated pubs, with sticky carpets! The downside
is that such stylish venues have attracted an enormous number of straight men
and women to the gay village, particularly at the weekend, when the likes of
Via Fossa can seem hardly gay at all.
