Welcome to fuel-crisis Britain! Just about all petrol
stations across the country are now out of fuel and yesterday people began panic-buying
food.
The North-West, where I live, was one of the first areas to be badly-affected.
But now things are pretty much the same throughout England and Scotland.
Yesterday I had an appointment at the dentist's, as I'd broken off part of a filled
tooth at the beginning of the week. It was strange standing at the bus-stop in
the middle of the afternoon and there being virtually no traffic on the normally-busy
main road.
It's odd... some roads are still quite busy, yet others are dead. It felt like
going back to what the road must have looked like 30 years ago: two vehicles a
minute instead of two hundred!
There were a lot more people on bicycles than usual and many obviously hadn't
been on a bike in years.
On the way back from the dentists I did some shopping... The supermarket was completely
sold out of milk and bread. I'd expected as much, as Tuesday evening was the first
time the national news had hinted at possible food shortages.
There was a kind of 'buzz' in the supermarket. The atmosphere seemed less relaxed
than usual. I went further down the road and found that the mini-market had milk.
I never did get any bread though.
Luckily I foresaw shortages coming earlier in the week and
did some shopping then. And yes I have bought more of certain items than usual:
namely milk and rice. Those are two things I can't live without. If necessary
I can bake my own bread.
It's obvious that people ARE going to panic buy. Who wants to end up sitting at
home with no staple foods this weekend, but smug in the knowledge that they DIDN'T
buy more than usual?
