I've probably always felt attracted to army men and uniform.
I don't know when or how it first started. When I was a kid I wanted a proper
Action Man (GI Joe) doll. But all I had was a cheaper version which had its legs
fixed permanently apart (though I can see the attraction of that now!). A couple
of decades later I finally bought myself the real doll.
In my teens I was an avid viewer of any TV programme about the army and I used
to cut out and keep photos of soldiers from recruiting ads in magazines. I particularly
remember one photo from the Radio Times that showed two US military policemen
with Alsatians.
Then one Saturday afternoon ten years ago I came across a stall in Manchester's
Corn Exchange that was selling various pieces of Army uniform (mainly British)
and the rest is history...
The years immediately after the Gulf War were great for anyone who likes uniforms
(especially desert combat!). When I was living in the East End of London in 1996,
shops such as Expectations, were filled to the roof with army surplus at ridiculously
low prices.
I was never really into skinhead stuff, only in as far as they wore combat trousers
and MA1 jackets. To me, Doc Marten boots look ugly. Now, British Army combat boots
are a different matter -- a much nicer shape! In fact, I took steps to deliberately
avoid looking too much like a skinhead by not wearing certain combinations of
clothes.
In the early to mid-1990's I used to go out to clubs in army kit and had a load
of fun. I even met a couple of lads who were on exactly the same wavelength as
me.
But then, from the mid-1990s onwards, it all seemed to change as the whole gay
skinhead thing, which had been simmering for years, took off bigtime. I soon began
to realise that I didn't like a lot of the guys who were into that.
The truth is my real interest is, and always has been, the guy and not the clothes
he happens to wear. I don't mind whether he is a bit of a camp 'sissy boy' or
a hunk, just so long as he has that certain spark.
In the past, it was an even bigger turn on if the guy with the 'spark' wanted
to wear army kit sometimes. But these days I feel that my interest in uniform
has diminished a lot. I can look at the tapes of soldier documentaries that did
it for me for 20 years, but I don't get the same feeling anymore.
Maybe it's a case of 'been there, done that' and I've worked through it. It just
doesn't 'do it' for me, the way it used to...
