Any shorts fans in? ;-)
The other night I dreamt that I had broken a huge piece off one of my front teeth.
All the following morning, I found myself running my tongue around my teeth just to check I hadn't (I hadn't!)...
Manchester has some wonderful old industrial buildings and many are being rennovated
and restored. In fact, the amount of construction in this city is really quite
phenomenal.
It's all a far cry from when I first came here almost 20 years ago and was shocked
by the amount of dereliction. I couldn't believe a major British city could have
a completely derelict railway station at its centre (a few years later this was
turned into the GMEX centre).
Unfortunately there are still some areas that have great buildings but which are
not popular places due to crime problems etc. and this is where buildings are
still disappearing.
One day you pass, and a pub, factory or mill that has stood on the same spot for
150 or 200 years has suddenly gone.
Of course, you can't preserve everything. I actually like modern architecture
too. But some of these buildings are important and, in some cases, precious little
remains to show what a particular area looked like before the 1960's.
Take a look at this building that I can see from my window. It's typical of the
red brick buildings that once dominated this area, but now they have almost all
gone.
