Like everyone, I'm totally shocked and horrified by today's events in the United
States.
At around 1.50pm GMT, I got a call from a friend who lives in Brooklyn. As we
chatted, suddenly he saw news of the first plane on his TV.
I turned on mine and the BBC was already showing events live. After a few minutes
we finished the call and almost immediately I saw the second plane hit the other
tower.
It seemed unreal. The plane was going at such speed that everyone expected it
to pass behind. Instead there was a fireball. It was hard to take in what had
happened. Like the rest of us, the newsreader could hardly believe what he had
seen -- his voice was shaking. My friend called again... After a while he could
see smoke from his window.
At first it seemed like some terrible, bizarre double accident. I sat there for
the next 90 minutes as things got worse. When I had to go out, I continued listening
on the radio. Then back home, I sat in front of the TV all evening. I was in tears
several times.
I know how bad I felt when Manchester was devasted by a huge bomb a few years
ago. By some miracle no one was killed in that. It's hard to imagine how the people
of New York must feel, with a disaster on this scale and with such loss of life...
I have so much admiration for the emergency services people who went into that
situation. My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by this.
