I saw an urban fox in the early hours of this morning.
I heard it howling and went out onto the balcony to see if I could spot it. At
first I couldn't see anything, the fox was so well camouflaged against the Autumn
leaves. It's quite brightly-lit around here and it was standing in the shadows.
But when the fox began moving, the noise of it running through the leaves was
quite loud. Not to mention its screeching! It looked pretty small. Maybe a youngster?
You know, I reckon I could smell its scent from my position about 90 feet above
it?
I've never seen a fox in the city before, but I saw a few when I lived out in
the countryside. On one marvellous occasion we drove past a fox hunt on the road.
The hunt was going in the opposite direction to us. Then, about a mile further
on, we overtook the fox, which was going in the same direction as us. In other
words, away from the horses and hounds! The hunt had completely missed it. As
you may have guessed, I'm against fox hunting.
I've never forgotten how red that fox was.
Truth is, lately I've been thinking that I don't
want to live in Manchester for much longer. This is my third period living here
and, the first two times, I left after three years. This time I've been here four
years and I feel ready to get away elsewhere.
I'm longing for the countryside again. For the fresh air and to have a garden.
Work has been dire lately. It was bad enough before September, but then the 11th
made matters much worse. Though I'm glad to say things have picked up quite a
bit over the last fortnight.
