These Autumn days are great if you're into photography.
With long shadows, warm sunlight, steam and smoke. Sometimes there's mist or fog
in the mornings, other times it's crisp and incredibly clear.
It was foggy all day today -- which is something that seemed to happen often when
I was a kid, but not much nowadays. I had some stuff to do in the city centre
this afternoon, so found myself walking through the streets at around 5pm, by
which time it was dark.
The fog made every light glow so much more. And, of course, there are lots of
lights, what with all the Christmas decorations.
Manchester looks absolutely great this year. I walked through Albert Square, which
is in front of the town hall, and which is decked out entirely in small white
fairy lights. There are stalls selling all kinds of European fare-- German sausages,
Dutch bulbs and Swiss chocolates. And peering over the roof of Manchester's Gothic
Victorian Town Hall as usual is the huge inflatable Santa Claus.
I walked down to the area that has been regenerated since the bomb blast five
years ago. With the new Marks and Spencer store, the Triangle shopping centre
and Printworks complex. The pavement here has lights sunk into it. By this time
I was feeling very 'Christmassy'. There was almost a sense of unreality to it
all.
This feeling was only heightened when, turning the corner onto a side street off
Shude Hill, I came across a film crew. They were shooting a drama outside of a
shop that had been made to look like a hairdressers.
The worst part is that I didn't have my camera with me to take any pics of the
lights! And I knew that there wouldn't be another chance to take any, as I am
due to leave tomorrow. Not to mention that there
is unlikely to be another evening quite as atmospheric as this one...
