I spent a couple of hours up a ladder on Tuesday and Wednesday
afternoon. The guttering at the back of the house needs replacing, as water is
dripping down onto the wall.
I managed to fiddle with the guttering, to solve the problem temporarily, but
I'll have to deal with it in the Spring. I also replaced a pane of glass that
was cracked.
It's not the ideal time of year to do that. I used a hairdryer to make sure the
window frame was nice and dry before I put in the glass. I felt kind of stupid
holding a hairdryer outdoors and up a ladder! Most of the houses around here have
switched to UPV plastic frames, which I don't like much.
The north-facing rear of the house is tough on wooden frames. The two remaining
original frames (from 80 years ago) are deteriorating quite badly and there are
signs that the modern frames in the kitchen and bathroom windows (from 25 years
ago) are rotting too. Luckily I've managed to save all the frames at the front,
by painting them every couple of years.
