Two
of the films that I developed yesterday were shot over the last few days.
However, some others had been lying around, undeveloped, for as long as 14 years!
I had no idea what was on them, or even what type of black and white film they
were, as they were unlabelled. They had been stuffed in a box when I moved house.
Very strange then, to find myself looking at, among other things, two rather nice
shots of my long-term boyfriend circa 1986! It's an odd feeling to see 'new' photographs
from so long ago. I won't show the pics here, as I'm not sure how he would feel
about being on my website.
Hmmm,
I wonder why I took this shot? ;-) That building in the background with the 'for
sale' sign is now Via Fossa. I wish I could go back to 1990 and buy it! |
Just as interesting, there were two rolls from 1990. Some
shots from the Canal Street August Bank Holiday jumble sale (the forerunner of
Manchester Mardi Gras/GayFest) and some from a trip I made to London in February
of that year.
In fact I already have other shots from both of these events. But, again, it was
odd to see things from a different viewpoint after so long. And it doesn't half
jog your memory about people, places and events.
The shots are damaged ('solarised') slightly. It looks as though some stray light
got to the films over the years.
August
1990 and no bars (or trees!) on Canal
Street. Just lots of warehouses up for sale. |
February 1990: I hadn't been down to London in ten years, so I was doing the tourist
thing -- seeing the famous places and buildings.
Little did I realise, when I took these photos, that exactly two years later I
would be living and working in London and even taking part in a discussion on
Radio 4 at BBC Broadcasting House (below)...

A
guardsman eyes me suspiciously as I take his photo. He's not allowed to move of
course. However the horse is cool about gay men with cameras.
In the early 20th Century, the Guards had a certain reputation. Damn it, I arrived
in London 70 years too late! |
