I finally put most of the finishing touches
to the storage and breakfast area -- which I built myself.
It still needs some handles for the cupboard doors but, ahem, we'll overlook that
fact for now. I know exactly which ones I'm going to order. I just haven't got
around to it yet ;-)
But what better time to look back at how the whole thing gradually took shape? |
I moved in here in May 1999 and was frustrated by the complete lack of storage
space. Not to mention the annoying living room, which had a door in three of the
corners. So I decided to do something about it. I've built things before. It's
fun, but time consuming.
Luckily a load of timber was being removed from a former laundry room in the building,
so I grabbed it. This stuff was going to be thrown away and, the fact is, this
timber from the 1960's has a quality that's hard to find these days. You certainly
won't get wood like this down at the local hardware store. Even if you could,
it would cost a fortune.
So, I did a lot of measuring, a lot of thinking and drew up some detailed plans.
Also I needed to make sure I made the best use of the timber. Only then could
the sawing begin. God, I'm so butch sometimes, I just can't stand it! ;-P
I couldn't be described as a craftsman... I make sure everything is solid and
won't fall down. But, if something is going to be hidden, then I don't really
care how I put it together. If there's a trick to building something like this,
it's thinking everything through in your head and drawing it on paper beforehand.
You need to think about every part that's going to be visible and make sure you
don't end up with any botched edges...
Less than a week later, I already had the downlighters in place. I wanted to get
an idea of how it would look with those switched on.
By September I was filling in some of the cracks.
One disadvantage of using secondhand timber, is the number of nail and screw holes
that need to be filled to give a good smooth surface before painting.
Hmmm, definitely still a few holes to fill here and there. In fact I can still
see right through the thing!
