I thought I'd do the same as last time and catch an early train. I like travelling
early -- it's quiet. So I ended up at Piccadilly Station at 3am. Yeah I look wrecked,
don't I? ;-p
There have been strikes lately, with the most recent on Saturday and yesterday.
Silly me... I thought everything would be back to normal today. But due to trains
not running over the weekend, some of the rolling stock was in the wrong place,
causing delays.
Just seconds after I took the pic above, the stationmaster came over to ask if
I would like to take up their offer of a taxi to Doncaster, where I could pick
up a northbound train.
So, I got into the cab with two other guys who were getting out at Sheffield.
We got to Sheffield some 90 minutes later and then it was just me with the taxi
driver. And I began to realise he really wasn't joking when he had said earlier
that he didn't have a clue about how to get to Doncaster.
I don't drive, but when I started seeing signs for Wakefield, I knew we were way
off course. We had gone some 50 miles in the wrong direction!
In the end, it took about four hours to get from Manchester to Doncaster and I
finally got onto a train. I wonder what kind of bill the railway company will
get for that taxi journey? I don't think they'll make a profit from me today!
Above: flashback to just before I
left, back in May. Below: now (aaaaaarghhhhhhhhhhh!) |
So finally I arrived here at the house. I was last here towards the end of May
and left the garden looking pretty tidy. Having been left to its own devices over
the whole summer, I wasn't all that surprised to find it looking like a complete
jungle. Of course, the birds love it and the nasturtiums, which I gave their freedom
just before I left, have grown all the way up the hedge. But no sign of the marrow
seedlings that I also put out...
I think the ground's probably too wet to do anything with it until next Spring.
I'm really going to hate looking out on this all winter!
