The UK's biggest ever demonstration took place in London yesterday, in protest
against the proposed war in Iraq. The Police said 750,000 people took part. The
organisers said nearer two million. The UK population is around 55 million, so
that is a remarkable turn-out and shows the strength of public opposition.
A recent poll showed that around 85% of the UK population is against a war
without the full backing of the United Nations. With 45% against a war under any
circumstances.
George
Bush and his administration give the impression that Britain is behind Tony Blair.
It isn't true... Personally I don't know anyone who supports an invasion of Iraq
without the consent of the United Nations and many people are deeply suspicious
of Bush's true motives.
Changing the subject... I had a great afternoon today. Miss Noodle cooked lunch
for me and some other friends, including my neighbour 'E'. We had Quorn roast
with carrots, roast
potatoes and roast onions. Followed by apple crumble and custard. Lots of red
wine too!
Afterwards we went to visit the nearby Chinese supermarket. It's a great place
to get dried beans, pulses and rice. I bought some mango and green chilli chutney.
'E' (who's a vegetarian) was disturbed by some packs of chicken feet and a
flattened dried duck, which was hanging from a hook and which looked a bit like
a frisbee. Actually I don't think any of us liked that sight very much!
Walking back it felt strangely like Christmas. Miss Noodle said it was because
it was freezing cold weather, we'd had a roast dinner and were all a bit drunk
on wine! Great fun and an afternoon that I'll remember for a long time...
