Last Sunday I found myself in East Manchester visiting a friend and I went
round to see him again today. This is the view from his living-room. A great panorama
of the city skyline, but a pretty scary area!
People look you straight in the eye and stare. A
year ago, another friend of mine lived in a converted
(and haunted!) mill near here and I noticed the same
attitude then.
I was reading about Ancoats -- which is the area
in the distance top left in the photo above. 150 years
ago, it was a densely-populated industrial area (now
almost deserted, see the pics below from last summer)
with aggressive people hanging about on the streets
even then. To the extent that some local people were
forced to sneak into their homes by the back door.
I wondered how many of the people now are the descendents of those tough characters
who lived around here at the time of the Industrial Revolution? It isn't many
generations ago when you think about it.
Lots of money is being spent on the area: the Commonwealth Games stadium is
near here and the houses are in good condition. There are even new ones. And I'm
sure there are lots of good people too. But it certainly isn't very welcoming
and I'm not sure how you change that...
