And here is a grab from my ten seconds of
fame in last night's episode of Queer as Folk.
I had thought it would probably be next week in part two, but not so. As an extra,
you can't really do better than a full-face shot like this!
So, for the benefit of all you poor guys outside of the UK, who didn't see this
tonight I'll give you my brief thoughts on it. By the way, it's questionable whether
some of you will ever get to see even the first series, as some countries
(including the US) have major problems with the sex in it.
Well, this second series seems different to me. The pace was slower and the production
had less style and atmosphere. There were fewer impressive modern locations (remember
the hospital in the very first episode?) and it showed a lot less of Manchester.
There was something not quite working for me. The scripts, shots and editing seemed
to lack the same edge.
There are some good moments -- particularly when Stuart gets blackmailed by his
8-year-old nephew. So I'll reserve final judgement for this time next week.
OTHER TELEVISION
I'm one of those people who has watched less and less television
since I got connected to the Internet in 1996 (I was on bulletin boards before
that -- remember those?).
But suddenly I'm watching a lot more, for the simple reason there is so much good
stuff on at the moment.
I love The League of Gentlemen -- a surreal BBC comedy set in a weird northern
town. It's not for the easily-offended or squeamish. I also like the more gentle
humour of Victoria Wood's Dinner Ladies.
Critics
often complain that there isn't any good comedy any more, but these two series
totally disprove that. Both are set to become 'classics'.
Reruns of hits from years gone by, showing at the moment, include Rising Damp,
Open All Hours, One Foot In the Grave and The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin.
A complete rerun of the The Good Life (known as Good Neighbours in the US) just
finished before Christmas. This is TV heaven for me. I love all of these.
