It was snowing quite heavily today and I put off going out to the shops. By 11pm
I had run out of milk, so I headed off to the local 24 hour store. The slush was
VERY slippery and I ended up walking on the road for most of the way.
Regular site visitors will know that I got mugged at knifepoint one afternoon
about three weeks ago. I thought it hadn't affected me too badly...
Even before it, I was very aware of people around, but now I realise I've become
hypersensitive!
I've also thought about what happened a couple of weeks back. I turned and saw the two muggers
walking towards me and I just assumed they were going to pass me.
I came to the conclusion that there is no point being aware of people who are
around you and coming near to you, unless you are prepared to prevent them coming
nearer at the first hint of trouble.
Once they have a knife pressed up against you, you don't have too many options
left...
There are always people asking for money and hanging about outside the 24 hour
shop. I walked out, got about twenty yards away and a scruffy guy came running
after me, shouting 'hold on a minute, mate.'
This literally made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, because I'm
pretty sure it's what one of the muggers said as he got near me.
I turned round and told him not to come any closer. He was about six feet away
by this time.
It's difficult to know what to do for the best in these situations. The guy was
obviously not all that 'well-balanced'. He started taking offence. I walked away.
He began shouting, becoming quite hysterical, saying that he was 'only' wanting
to sell me some drugs and wasn't going to rob me.
By this time I was crossing the road to put as much distance between him and me as I could.
He was walking around in an agitated state. Things then took a really bizarre
turn, with him shouting 'I'd f**k you if you wanted me to'.
So what do you do for the best? Humour people, to keep them calm, and take
the risk that one in fifty, or whatever, having got close enough, will rob you?
Or do what I did and get this hysterical reaction probably a lot more often?
