BBC2
has been showing old episodes of Dr.Who and for the last couple of weeks it has
been Genesis of the Daleks with Tom Baker. I'm not a Dr.Who fanatic, but I do
enjoy seeing the better stories.
Plus there is a humorous side. Last week I noticed that they have Bisley filing
cabinets and 1970's 'trim-phones' on the Daleks' home planet Skaro. Bloody British
Telecom gets everywhere...
My other favourite story from the Tom Baker era is Pyramids of Mars.
And last night I watched the first part of Jack the Ripper with Michael Caine.
I originally saw this Thames Television two-parter in 1988 when it was first broadcast
-- one hundred years after the murders took place.
Apparently Caine won an award for it and I must admit to being fascinated with
the whole Jack the Ripper story. Last I heard, there was a theory that he was
a Liverpool merchant, but I'm not up-to-date on current thinking. I should find
out.
At the time of the murders there were rumours that the Royal Family might be involved
and it was interesting to watch this programme again in the light of the various
conspiracy theories surrounding the death of Diana.
Meanwhile it was announced today that former doctor Harold Shipman (who practiced
in this area) is appealing against his conviction for the murder of fifteen of
his patients. I've heard many people say that, even now, it hasn't quite sunk
in with them that this man is Britain's worst-ever serial killer.
There's something about the cool and calm way he carried out the crimes (lethal
injection) combined with shock that a doctor would ever do such a thing, that
puts the whole case almost beyond comprehension.
