I bought a CD writer this week.
We have a small computer network where I live and I'm linked up with six of my
neighbours. As well as being able to chat and swap files, we've always been able
to back-up data on to CD using the network.
But, for the last six months, I've had some extra money coming in from my web
design work and I've set that aside to buy computer software and equipment.
I figured that writers aren't going to drop in price much more in the near future
(in fact I even heard there is a shortage of them, in which case they may increase)
so I decided to buy my own (135/$216).
Frankly, I wasn't that excited about it. I saw it just as a way of doing a more
regular back-up. But, when I got the writer, some blanks and rewritable discs,
and began reading, I became a lot more enthusiastic!
When I was a teenager, I was well into tape recording -- both voice and music.
A few years later, I worked on a talking newspaper for the blind.
But then I got more into photography and video and audio fell by the wayside a
little. Anyway, this has rekindled some of that old enthusiasm and I'm looking
forward to making some audio and multimedia CDs.
I just love what you can do with technology!
The other big news this week is that, from the beginning of June, the UK will
finally get flat-rate Internet calls from British Telecom.
The charges they've announced still seem too high -- it'll cost 20 ($36) per
month for 24 hour/7 day access. Plus we'll still continue to be charged for local
calls here. Still its welcome. It's just a pity we've had to fight BT for years
to get it.
So, it's likely that GarySeven will go 24 hours/7 days from June!
I'm planning another trip off to the country in April. I can't wait. Hopefully
the weather will be good enough by then to get down to the beach.
