I got back to Manchester two weeks ago. As you can
imagine, it was quite a culture shock returning to the city after ten weeks in
a quiet country village.
But the break has done me a lot of good and it makes me appreciate the many things
that the city has to offer. In particular the wider range of food! Plus it is
good to see some of my friends again.
There were yet more computer problems during my last few weeks away. Having replaced
the modem, which had apparently got zapped during a thunderstorm, some of my RAM
then failed and I found myself struggling with just 64mb (down from 190mb).
I don't think Windows 98 will run properly on that little memory; I kept getting
errors and registry problems all the time.
Luckily the RAM was less than a year old, so still under guarantee. As soon as
I got back to Manchester, and replaced the faulty strips, everything suddenly
worked OK again.
But that's partly why I've been away from my site. It was a problem running the
software that I use to update it.
In the near future I have to return to the other house, to supervise the installation
of the boiler and central heating, which will take three days in all. Having full
gas-fired central-heating throughout is going to transform the house in the winter
and I expect to spend a lot more time up there.
My
friend JM came to stay with me for two days at the end of last week. Though we
talk on the 'phone regularly, I hadn't seen her in person for several years and
it was fun to spend time together. She hasn't changed at all...
We took some black and white photographs and this is one of her shots of me. While
she was on the bus home to London, I developed the films, ran them through my
film scanner and e-mailed the best shots to her, so they were waiting for her
when she got back.
Looking through my negative file, I suddenly realised that it was ten years and
one week since I last developed a black and white film at home!
Summer has been great this year and very hot in Manchester. Although a friend
was watering my plants, I still lost a couple due to the heat while I was away.
Including part of a big cactus!
This coming weekend is the Manchester GayFest. As usual I'll be there taking some
photographs and, like last year, I expect to get the first of them processed and
onto my site over the weekend, while the event is still taking place.
See you there perhaps? ;-)
