It's
Halloween and I'm ready with those pumpkins. But this year I've bought them to
cook, rather than make into lanterns.
I love pumpkins. They're so versatile and can be turned into almost any kind of
meal -- from the traditional pumpkin pie, to soup, risotto, pasta sauce, cakes
and biscuits. You can roast the seeds too!
Cooked pumpkin freezes well and they are great value at about 20p per 1lb.
Sadly here in Britain, despite their versatility, pumpkins are treated pretty
much as a Halloween novelty. So around 31 October is the only time they are available
in the shops.
I'm going to have a talk with my dad to see if he can grow me some next year.
Or, who knows, perhaps I'll have a garden then and be able to do it myself? ;-)
The sun was streaming into my room early this morning. The sharpness of the image
above shows just how bright the reflected light was. Here in the UK, October has
been the mildest since records began (I guess that would be about 200 years ago).
Some days have been like summer.
A report on BBC news said farmers are changing the crops they grow (to bloody
pumpkins I hope, LOL). One farmer said he expects to see 'sub-tropical' plants
being grown here in coming years.
I've been sleeping very badly lately, perhaps for the first time in my entire
life.
Regular readers will know that sometimes I end up working at night and sleeping
during the day. Which is not usually a problem, as I still get 8 hours sleep or
so. Though, after a week to ten days, I find I need to get back to a more normal
schedule again.
At the end of August/beginning of September, I had two colds, one after the other.
I have asthma, so colds sometimes hit me badly.
So I stayed in bed for two days and was sleeping here and there. Then September
11th happened... That, and the aftermath of it, really disturbed me.
I saw the biological thing coming only too clearly. And with Tony Blair at the
forefront of things I thought it would be Britain that would be hit. Not with
anthrax, but with smallpox I thought. Or maybe even some kind of portable nuclear
device (some of these things could fit in a briefcase).
And maybe they wouldn't choose Britain's largest city. Perhaps the second or third
largest instead... Eeek!
I was so concerned, that I would have left Manchester and headed up to the other
house to live for a while, if it hadn't been for the fact that currently my income
is dependent on me being here in the city.
Anyway, this week I have finally started sleeping a bit more normally again...
