They say the camera never lies. But would you believe my kitchen actually measures
just 6ft 6ins x 8ft 6ins? Looks bigger huh? Well it's due to the wide-angle camera
lens that I use.
While I was up at the other house in the summer I had an Internet friend visit.
Standing in the garden, his first comment was about how much longer the garden
looks on the webcam.
I think this shot of me eating a banana looks a bit scarey...
To give you some idea of how little TV I watch these days... The other morning
I watched my tape of last years Christmas specials of The Fast Show (apparently
known by the name 'Brilliant' in the USA) and League of Gentlemen (both BBC shows).
I woke up way too early and it seemed the perfect opportunity.
Overall, The Fast Show wasn't the best-ever. But one sketch had me laughing so
much I just couldn't stop. It was a spoof ad for a South American floor cleaner.
There was a blonde housewife, a middle-aged guy in hot pants and silver high-heeled
boots, and two dancers, all singing 'Futha Mukka piney shine' while slipping around
on the polished studio floor.
It's hard to say exactly why this was SO funny. Somehow it all came together perfectly
and the echoing screechy noises as they slipped about were the perfect finishing
touch.
It just goes to prove that sometimes pure slapstick
-- people falling over -- can create the biggest laughs :-)
The League of Gentlemen was great too. If you don't
know this, well it is very dark and cruel humour. Part of the show was set in
Victorian times and they included a lovingly-recreated spoof of a scene from the
film The Railway Children. It had the elderly gentlemen mooning the kids from
the railway carriage... Just wicked!
My only slight reservation is that when something has been sent up SO hilariously,
it tends to ruin the original when you see it again. :-)
Was it co-incidence that there was no further series of The House of Elliott after
the hilarious French and Saunders send-up of that show?
