It has been raining LOTS. We had more than half
an inch of rain in one hour.
BBC News 24 shows the American ABC nightly news in the early hours of the morning
here and the other night there was a report about the constant rain that they
have been having in the American mid-west. With rivers seven feet higher than
normal and the situation now threatening to disrupt crop-sowing.
As a European watching this report, the thing that struck me was the lack of any
comment about what might be the cause. In the UK, flooding seems to get worse
each year and it is accepted that this is probably caused by global warming. That
would be likely to be mentioned in any TV report.
This week the United Nations released a report saying that what happens to the
environment in the next 30 years is going to determine the future of the planet.
There is concern over here in Europe that the USA doesn't seem too interested
in reducing its carbon emissions...
I think it's another illustration of a gulf that seems to be opening up between
Europe and America on many different issues.
The third series of Big Brother started tonight. For me, it wasn't a promising
start.
This year it's necessary to pay £10 per month ($15US) if you want to watch
live footage on the website. The first two weeks are 'free', though you have to
give your credit card details up front. So for the ten weeks it'll cost £20.
Who knows, maybe the final Friday will even count as the first day of a third
month?
When you consider that £10 is roughly one tenth of what we pay to enjoy
everything that is broadcast by the BBC on all its services for an entire year,
it seems a bit steep for Real Media videos of one programme for a month.
I wonder if Channel 4 is in effect setting up a soft-porn service for adults (ie.
credit card holders) only. I read that the shower cameras are accessible on the
website...
I see the cost of 'phone calls to nominate for eviction has also increased by
250% -- from 10p last year to 25p now. All a bit too much.
Plus, with the demise of the ITV Digital service, I can no longer watch the E4
channel, which broadcast extended coverage last year. So I suspect I'll only be
watching Big Brother once a week, on Fridays -- eviction night. Then again, I
felt the same way at the start of last year's series!
Channel 4 also needs to get its finger out regarding its website. When I looked,
90 minutes before Big Brother was due to start, the forum on the site didn't work.
Also, didn't the site used to be at channel4.co.uk? That page now brings up a
server error and only channel4.com works. Bizarre and stupid...
During the programme itself, there were problems with the sound and, at one point,
the show seemed to finish a minute too early, leaving a countdown clock visible
on screen for a long time! Oops...
I used to really like Channel 4. But it has nose-dived!
