Just two months to go until the start of the Commonwealth
Games here in Manchester. It doesn't seem long ago that the big countdown clock
in the city centre showed 600 days to go!
This afternoon, as I headed towards the nearby coffee shop with my friend Miss
Noodle, we suddenly noticed a jumbo jet on an unusual flight path. Neither of
us had ever seen a plane in that particular spot in the sky and it was so low
we could make out the logo on the tail.
It seemed to be heading towards the stadium that has been built for the Games
and, for a few seconds, we were rooted to the spot, thinking that it might be
some terrorist thing. We watched for a minute or two and eventually the plane
got itself onto the usual approach for the airport.
At the coffee shop, it turned out we weren't the only ones who had noticed the
same odd things with planes this morning.
There are no real skyscrapers here in Manchester. But we both agree that we can
no longer look up at a tall building without almost expecting a plane to crash
into it. That's the impact that the pictures of 11th September have had on us.
And it is why they stopped showing those particular shots on TV.
