Very hot and sunny! This afternoon I heard some music to
the west of where I live. I went down to see my friend Miss Noodle to ask if she
knew what it was. We decided to track it down...
We headed off through Hulme, stopping to buy some ice cream. The music seemed
much further away than we had thought. But finally we discovered that it was a
carnival procession on the part of Manchester's black community and it had been
moving futher away from us all the time, which explained why it was so hard to
find it!
There were great costumes and some very loud music. I was struck by how non-commercial
it all was compared to the gay Mardi Gras parade. Some of the floats seemed to
be themed for particular countries. There was one for Trindad and Tobago. Unfortunately
I hadn't taken along my camera.
The procession wound its way through Whalley Range and Moss Side. Finally ending
up at Alexandra Park -- one of Manchester's big old Victorian parks.
We ate some Carribean food and watched a reporter for a local TV station who just
couldn't get her piece to camera right. I was worried about my head burning, as
I hadn't brought a baseball cap. So I bought a bandana.
We walked back and I discovered that the Asda supermarket isn't as far away from
where I live as I had previously thought. I'll have to pay a visit...
In the evening, I met my friend 'S' who recently graduated. I can't tell you his
real name or what he graduated in, because he is from Pakistan and quite in the
closet. Except when he walks down Canal Street holding my hand ;-)))
On Canal Street it was as if it was Mardi Gras. So busy...
In Via Fossa, 'S' pointed out the guy he met last night and went into extremely
intimate details. He is SO indiscrete!
'S' may come up to the other house to stay with me sometime in August. Should
be fun! I am planning on visiting my mum after her hip replacement too while up
there. The operation happened last Wednesday and she is doing just fine.
