It seems ironic that child murderer Myra Hindley should die today, on the same
day as the annual BBC Children In Need charity appeal...
Hindley and her lover Ian Brady abducted, tortured and murdered a series of children
in the Manchester area. Their bodies were buried on the moors and one has never
been recovered.
If she had been convicted one year earlier, she would have hanged back in the
1960's. However the death penalty in Great Britain had been abolished in 1965
so, instead, Myra Hindley spent the rest of her life in prison.
Her case became a political 'hot-potato'. With no Home Secretary wanting to be
known as the one who freed Myra Hindley.
I'm against the death penalty on principle. Besides which, there have been far
too many miscarriages of justice in the past.
It may be right and proper that Myra Hindley was never released. But there should
be more consistency in the sentences that the worst murderers serve. It concerns
me that one person spends their whole life in prison, whereas another is released
after eight years or less.
Hindley's crimes against children were unspeakable. But in recent years there
have been some horrific murders of elderly people, which I think are just as bad.
And I suspect those criminals won't still be behind bars thirty-six years from
now...
