My
friend Gianni visited for the day. We started off with lunch at a cafe in Albert
Square. He had pasta. I had pizza.
The food was quite good, but the service is slow, particularly for lunchtime,
when people tend to be in a rush. As you can see from the photo, the place wasn't
exactly full.
Then I gave him a whirlwind tour of some Manchester city centre places that
he hadn't visited before.
Affleck's Palace was one of our destinations. This shopping arcade has been
around in Manchester as long I have! It opened in 1982 -- the same year I first
came here to go to University.
Its an old department store building that is now home to dozens of small shops
on five storeys. You can get clothing or jewellery, buy a hat or have a haircut,
get a poster or a weird rubber handbag like those shown below...
He was impressed, as you can see...
I even got dragged into the gay village and The Rembrandt for a drink! Unfortunately
by this time I wasn't feeling great. I definitely seemed to be coming down with
something...
I saw my friend onto the train at Piccadilly Station. The almosphere in the
station seemed tense and I couldn't wait to get out of there. There were lots
of Police and people talking into radios... Due to this Iraq situation and the
discovery of Ricin at a railway station in Paris I suppose...
