I seem to have tonsillitis. Really bad Friday and yesterday. Croak... I spent
much of the time in bed watching TV. But feeling quite a bit better today.
My neighbour 'E' agrees that the left-hand blind is definitely a different
shade of blue... You can't tell on the camera though.
At 10.30pm I was talking to Miss Noodle and 'E' on Internet chat (which is
a bit sad as 'E' lives next door and her PC is literally 20 feet away from mine!).
The three of us decided to go to Rusholme for a curry! I called the restaurant
and it turns out it is open until 4am.
To begin with, we were the only people in the large restaurant. As they had
nothing to do, most of the waiters were standing watching Sky News on a television
mounted near the ceiling. Coverage of Iraq of course and I imagine, being of South
Asian origin, some of them may have relatives in nearby Pakistan.
IRAQ
My thoughts on this conflict? Why the hurry? Saddam had to be removed, but
the United States and Great Britain should have waited for the full approval of
the United Nations. Or at least until some other countries had agreed to provide
practical help.
The action could then have been carried out with more moral authority and with
the active participation of other countries. Which would have made it seem less
'imperialist' to the people in Iraq and other Arab nations. I don't think America
quite appreciates the degree of distrust and downright hatred that many Arabs/Muslims
feel towards the USA.
The reason George Bush didn't want to wait is because this is not really about
terrorism, liberation or weapons of mass destruction. It has been planned for
years and is about Bush and his friends taking control of that region.
Either Tony Blair is a deeply misguided man or perhaps he thought he could
be some kind of restraining influence on Bush? But, I deeply regret that Blair
has gone along with this and I feel ashamed that Great Britain is involved in
this war. Blair has been reckless with our reputation in Europe and among our
Commonwealth friends.
However, I believe it is the USA that will reap the worst consequences in the
long term. So many people worldwide look at the USA's record of involvement in
other countries since Vietnam (including their support for, and arming of, Saddam
originally) and they believe that Bush is doing this for the wrong reasons.
I feel desperately sorry for the brave men and women soldiers who have been
sent out there by Britain and the United States and for their families.
