Out in the country now, in my little 'bolt-hole' away from
civilisation. I had thought I might get up here before Christmas. But didn't.
Instead I arrived on 27th.
It took me some time to get the PC set up and the house tidied up, as I was last
here in June. Hope to spend much more time here in 2000 -- my work should allow
that.
The house isn't as well heated as my city place, so I wear more clothes -- which
will disappoint some site visitors I guess :-) But it isn't as cold as this picture
suggests, as I'd just come in from outside.
Got some stuff to do in the garden if the weather stays OK -- pruning bushes etc.
and in the spring I'll have to begin painting inside and out. But got to start
on my usual work on Monday. Not sure when I'll return home.
An old friend who lives locally came round on Wednesday and we went out for dinner.
No great plans for New Year. Just about everything would be too expensive, involved
too much travelling or was too awkward. Could have gone to a party with mum and
dad, but it would involve travelling back there and probably a two or three day
round trip (and I just got here!). I would rather put the money towards a holiday
later in the year and spend the time on other things here.
New Year's Eve in London looks great on paper but I did it a few years back --
standing at the foot of Big Ben -- and it wasn't that great. Horribly congested
and noisy. I don't feel any desperation to be with other people, at all costs,
at midnight. I don't think clubs and bars will really be any different from a
usual New Year. And I've been there and done that.
To me, it's more about who you spend New Year's Eve with, rather than where. Of
course it would nice to have great company AND a great location. This year, I
wanted to come here after Christmas and that limited my options...
Strange to think that the twentieth century is coming to an end. The year 2000
has always been surrounded by so much speculation. I wonder what it will really
bring? On a personal basis, I feel very optimistic and I'm looking forward to
it. In fact, to tell the truth, there's a part of me that can't wait to get Christmas
and New Year over with and get back to normality! :-)
