I arrived back from Manchester yesterday lunchtime.
By the time I'd finished getting stuff together it was so late that I decided
not to sleep at all and to catch the first train. Here's the proof -- a shot of
the platform at Manchester Piccadilly station with the clock showing 6.36am!
They're getting towards the end of the development work that they've been doing
on the Victorian station. This new roof is part of it.
It was a beautiful sunny morning as the train pulled out of Manchester Piccadilly...
You'll have to excuse any odd marks or reflections on the photos. The windows
were quite dirty!
A spectacular mill building. Many of these are being converted into apartments
and some are officially world heritage sites.
I think this is the station at Stalybridge. It has a wonderful old circular clock
which you can just about see above the man's head. Also note the blue plaque just
to the left of the big pillar ( though I don't know what information is on it).
In Britain you'll find these plaques on buildings of historical interest -- the
birthplace of someone famous or the site of an important event, for example.
The views were amazing as the train passed through
the Pennine Hills. It was sunny but misty too. Unfortunately I was sitting on
the wrong side of the train to get the good misty shots!
