Talking with the little boy two doors along, about his hamster, which escaped
a few weeks ago.
Hey -- I forgot to mention! Just before I left for Manchester last time, I looked
out of an upstairs window and saw something large and ginger just disappearing
under the hedge. I couldn't believe my eyes, because it had a tail like a rat,
but seemed much too big and the wrong colour. So I convinced myself it had probably
been a small cat.
Well, when I got back, I learned that it had been a rat. In fact, the house
three doors along (which is empty a lot of the time and only used for holidays)
had them living under the floor.
The hamster never turned up. And, as it was one of the small varieties and got
loose in the house next to the one with the rats, I guess it could have become
a snack.
If you remember, at the start of the year, I discovered I'd had a mouse
in the kitchen cupboard. Again, that was just before I left for a trip to
Manchester. I wonder if me coming across a rodent every time I head off to Manchester
is some kind of omen?
This was the most disgusting orange I've eaten in a long time. Really dry and
pithy. One thing I do miss around here, is the top quality fruit and veg that's
available in the city.
