This
afternoon on my balcony... Holding the camera so close (at arms length) doesn't
produce the most flattering result!
For years, Manchester has had a reputation for rain. Now with the Commonwealth
Games in progress the city is having the last laugh... The weather is sunny and
scorching hot! Well at least by British standards... And it looks set to last
for the rest of this week, with just one cooler day.
Miss Noodle was on my balcony this morning for our regular
webmaster conference. Even eight floors up there was little relief from the muggy
heat. Few homes here have air conditioning. Worse still, these apartments were
built with electric underfloor heating. The concrete floors absorb the heat, so
don't cool down much at night either!
Late evening I walked over to the supermarket to get some shopping. I took along
a digital camera that I'd borrowed and here are the pics I took...
The Rembrandt Hotel on Canal Street. Nothing like as busy
as last night... |

This is the new Chorlton Street bus station. One of the many
areas that have been spruced up for the Commonwealth Games ;-) |
Chinatown... A scruffy-looking guy seemed to have his eye
on the camera as he walked past. So, I didn't hang about taking lots of pics!
There are loads of extra Police officers on the street for the Games. The overall
security is phenomenal, for obvious reasons after Sept 11... But also due to the
number of problem people who are always around in the city centre.

The time was around 9.15pm and people were sitting on the grass in Piccadilly
Gardens, watching live coverage of Netball on the large video screen.
The new fountains in Piccadilly Gardens have proved to be a great success. Jets
of water shoot up out of the concrete high up into the air and then die down,
often disappearing completely for a while.
I'm not sure whether the intention was to create something that was 'artistic'
or fun. Maybe both. The fact is, children love dodging the water and trying to
judge when it will shoot up out of the concrete. And it's safe, as there are no
pools of water.
This office block must be about 25 storeys high and has a
huge image of a woman athlete down one side of it. Quite stunning. |

Trams returned to the streets of Manchester about eleven years ago and the system
has been a big success, though they are a little short of rolling stock and have
had to buy some secondhand trams from San Francisco. Unfortunately not the picturesque
ones, but some ugly 1970's versions.
Destination: the 24 hour Tesco Metro! I really should have
got organised, ordered my shopping online and had it delivered. But I had run
out of too much stuff by today.
