People
returning to the city centre from the Commonwealth games stadium |
Of course a whole ten days without rain was too much to hope for here ;-) The
rain began and didn't stop for days!
This afternoon, a couple of hours before the Commonwealth Games were due to close,
we went for a walk around the city centre.
Everyone else had the same idea apparently, as it was packed with locals and people
from many different nations (see the woman in the 'G'Day' t-shirt in the photo
above). I imagine it could be the busiest Sunday afternoon ever seen in Manchester!
This is the Triangle, formerly the Corn Exchange, and part of the area that was
damaged by the bomb in 1996. A terrible event, but great things have happened
because of it, including the regeneration of the city centre. Would Manchester
look this good now if that event had never happened?
All the work has culminated in the Commonwealth Games this week and the signs
are that the Games have been a complete triumph.

It
began raining heavily again and we had to take shelter at Victoria Station for
a while, where we teased two good-humoured Policemen. We complained to them about
the rain and suggested they should do something to stop it!
And we gazed at the Urbis Centre, with its unusual glass walls and sloping
roof. Urbis is a new museum about urban life.
In the photo above, you can see the airship that has been buzzing about over the
city centre throughout the week.
Finally the rain eased a little and we walked home. Unfortunately the heavy downpour
resumed and kept up throughout the closing ceremony. There were some spectacular
moments, including an enormous portrait of the Queen, which was painted onto a
transparent sheet from underneath, by hundreds of children. It was raining so
much that I couldn't risk using the camcorder outdoors. But I did grab this still
of the final fireworks...
