The first night of Manchester Mardi Gras...
The event was almost a disaster again, due to a dispute over safety between the
organisers, the City Council and Police. In fact Mardi Gras had officially been
cancelled earlier this week.

Street, GayFest 2001 |
The Police and City Council wanted to restrict public drinking to just Canal Street.
The organisers said this would be too dangerous as, on one side, Canal Street
has a low wall with a ten foot drop into the water.
I don't want to be too quick to jump to a judgement on this, as there's a lot
of antagonism between various parties and people due to the past history of the
event.
Cancelling Mardi Gras at a couple of days notice caused an outcry and a protest
march was planned. It's shameful to let down visitors who may be travelling to
Manchester from all over the world. Not to mention the charities and people taking
part.
However by yesterday, like some stormy gay relationship, Mardi Gras was almost
all back on again.
I'll probably just go to the street parade which happens tomorrow
afternoon...
