One of my favourite books of photographs is called A Class Apart. It's a collection
of photos taken by a British man named Montague Glover.
During the period immediately after the First World War -- a much more innocent
age -- middle class Montague Glover was able to prowl the streets of London, taking
photos of soldiers, workmen and other 'rough trade' without arousing too much
suspicion. Some he took home with him and photographed them there!
Then,
at the beginning of the 1930's, he met a good-looking working class man from the
East End called Ralph and the second part of the book is mainly shots of him.
They were together for more than 50 years.
At the end of the book there are two particularly poignant photographs. One shows
Ralph as a young man sitting next to a fireplace. The other shows him sitting next to the same fireplace but maybe 30 years later. It says something about youth
and getting old...
So here's my version. On the left a photo of me taken when I was aged 21. On the
right a shot taken today, almost twenty years later and standing in exactly the
same spot.
When I was in my early twenties I thought of taking a shot like this each year.
Then, in the future animating them, like one of those time-lapse movies! Horrific
viewing I should think and luckily I never got around to doing it.
