The other night I watched a documentary about Mae West. It was inspirational!
I had no idea she was anything more than an actress with a neat way with a catchphrase.
In fact she started off by writing her own plays, which eventually ended up
on Broadway and it was there that Hollywood discovered her. Eventually she came
to have a great deal of control over her film career, which was quite remarkable
for a woman in the 1930's... It reminded me of Lucille Ball, some decades later.
One of her secrets of success, she said, was that she refused to have negative
thoughts about anything and never allowed herself to get emotionally dependent
on any man.
Though when I saw some footage of her when she was aged in her 80's in the
1960's, still bleached blonde and with unfeasibly huge breasts, I couldn't help
but think of that episode of Absolutely Fabulous when they flashed forward to
show Patsy in her old age! The make-up could have been based on that film clip.
It was a wonderful story and I hope that will be me, still dancing and happy,
in 2043 (but minus the huge sagging bazookas).
