A frustrating day... Though I managed to do most of the things I needed to.
This morning I set out to get some Christmas presents. I took along the camcorder
and planned to make a short film of the Christmas markets and decorations, to
put up here on my site. I did an introduction (above). It was raining a bit.
Within a couple of minutes it had got much heavier and I was struggling to keep
the water off the camera lens. Considering it was just two days before Christmas
Day the minor streets seemed unusually deserted. That was not the only surprise!
I turned the corner onto Albert Square and the European Christmas Market had gone!
Wahahahahah! And so had the one in St. Ann's Square. I think they had even begun
taking down the Christmas decorations.
It looked grim! Wouldn't you think the greatest time to visit a Christmas Market
would be on 23rd December or Christmas Eve? I guess those Dutch and German stallholders
had to get home? But I couldn't help laughing. This could only happen in Britain.
End of video project!
I went in to Waterstones to buy my dad's present -- a copy of Michael Moore's
book: 'Dude Where's My Country?' Next I picked up a portable CD player for my
mum. Thought it would be useful in hospital, as she only has a radio.
Then I went for a latte in the upstairs food area in the Arndale Centre. This
is the kind of place I avoid, but I just wanted to dry out a bit. £1.70
for a very average latte and the view shown below. Awful noisy 'shopping centre'
atmosphere... I should have gone into the Royal Exchange instead.
Then onto the Post Office at Spring Gardens. I needed to post these gifts to mum
and dad and I had already checked on the Royal Mail website to make sure they
were doing Guaranteed Next Day Delivery for tomorrow (24th). The site said they
were.
However, at the Post Office I was told that I could pay the £6.50 fee for
the 'guaranteed next day' service but they couldn't guarantee it would get there NEXT day! In fact it might not arrive until 28th they said. Nor would I be entitled
to the usual refund if that happened. What a load of rubbish! The service is going
to the dogs. I paid up, but I felt annoyed that the gifts might not get there
in time for Christmas.
I decided to get myself a guillotine. No... not because the rain, the Royal Mail
and the lacklustre latte had driven me to end it all (though who could blame me?).
The guillotine is so I can trim the photographs that I print out :-) Another one
of those 'things I always wanted'...
Back home I called the Royal Mail and they told me that the Spring Gardens Post
Office is giving out wrong information and the package SHOULD indeed get there
tomorrow.
